This quarterly round-up, along with our weekly interviews and daily social media updates, is our way of shining a bright spotlight on the talented women directors with profiles in our database.
Last time, our roundup included 74 ads, short films, and music videos. This edition, which covers work released within April, May, and June, includes MORE THAN DOUBLE that amount. BAM!
This is a sampling of the vast quantity of amazing work being created by women directors on Free The Bid. Directors from our database have also been busy working in episodic TV, documentary, Innovation (VR, AR, AI, and beyond), and feature films.
Free The Bid had the opportunity to screen one feature film in particular released during this time frame: the essential “Half The Picture,” by Amy Adrion. Featuring interviews with high profile women directors, including Ava DuVernay, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Lucy Walker, Joey Soloway, Catherine Hardwicke, Miranda July, and Gina Prince-Bythewood, among many others, this documentary eviscerates the systemic inequality that women directors confront at every level of the film industry, and charts the progress of the EEOC’s ongoing investigation into discriminatory hiring practices at several major Hollywood studios. Cannes Lions Winners . . .
During this year’s Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity, while women were underrepresented within all award categories, we were glad to see that campaigns directed by Free The Bid ladies took home Gold, Silver, and Bronze Lions across a number of categories. Women directors were also awarded at the Young Director Awards, and included in the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors Showcase.
