Even though it’s the shortest month of the year, February has been quite an eventful one!
The month was kicked off by Super Bowl LIII, where some of our directors had the opportunity to shine (although far fewer than we’d like—more on that later!)
More recently, while the 2019 Oscars failed to adequately acknowledge the work of women directors at large, the Free The Bid team still had reasons to cheer: director Chai Vasarhelyi‘s Free Solo, co-directed by Jimmy Chin, was awarded Best Documentary Feature, while director Rayka Zehtabchi won Best Documentary Short for “Period. End Of Sentence,” her short film about Indian women fighting the stigma around menstruation.
The Oscars are also a huge night for advertising, and Kim Gehrig‘s Nike ad, “Dream Crazier,” was a highlight of the entire night. Another highlight? JJ Adler‘s work for Alaska Airlines, which was created by a whole team full of Free The Bid talent (editor Ali Mao; colorist Jill Bogdanowicz).

Women Directors Were At The Super Bowl . . . ?
Despite the fact that many of the ads in this year’s Super Bowl heavily “leaned in” to themes of female empowerment…hardly any women were hired to direct ads that aired during the game.
In 2018, 4 women directors shot spots for the Super Bowl; in 2017, the number was 5.
This year, again, only 4 women directors were hired to helm Super Bowl ads.
Really makes you wonder whether women were even given the opportunity to bid on many of these ads…hmm.
